The Enescu project closes the circle of a trilogy, albums and shows, in which I explore my romanian roots as part of the process of maturing as an artist. "Luminitza", my feelings and impressions upon returning to Romania after the revolution. "Maria T" an hommage to the great singer Maria Tanase, "Enescu - Balanescu" an artistic meeting with Romania's great musical genius.
The concert will comprise an interpretation of Enescu's Octet op.7, a masterpiece written in his youth. The performance will use sophisticated technology, with one quartet playing live and the second quartet prerecorded. The artistic model for the interpretation will be a performance directed by Enescu in 1920, bursting with youthful exuberance.
The central place of the performance will be taken by a new work, which I will write inspired by Enescu's most popular compositions, his Rhapsodies. I would like to find colours within the String Quartet which reflect Enescu's brilliant orchestration, while at the same time building a bridge between Enescu's wonderful soundworld and the musical world of a string quartet at the cutting edge of new music at the beginning of the 21st Century. A performance of Enescu's Quartet no.2, one of the most intriguing of his works, full of mystery and unspeakably beautiful moments. (Alexander Balanescu)
