Logan Richardson was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri into a rich historical lineage of improvisational music greatness.
Growing up in Kansas City as a young saxophonist Logan was fortunate to have the opportunity not only to draw from the home town legends such as Jay McShann, Claude ‘Fiddler’ Williams, Ahmad Alaadeen, Sonny Kenner, Eddie Saunders, and many more.
By the age of 16 Logan had begun presenting concerts professionally and through focused diligence had become ambidextrous in the styles of Classical, and Improvised music. To the point that he had garnered opportunities ranging from being a featured soloist with The Kansas City Symphony to performing in Quintet with Jimmy Heath.
By the age of 19 Logan relocated to Boston, Massachusetts to study with Billy Pierce at The Berklee College of Music. In his second year of study, at the age of 21 years Logan decided to move to Manhattan, New York, where he was to live for 10 years, after receiving a full scholarship to study at The New School University. Logan arrived in his new home of down town Manhattan, New York at the end of August 2001, two weeks prior to the 9/11 attacks on New York City.
After the smoke had cleared, Logan began performing, recording, and touring internationally with artist such as Nasheet Waits, Stefon Harris, Greg Tardy, Joe Chambers, Billy Hart, Jason Moran, Butch Morris, NEXT Collective, Michelle Rosewoman, Gerald Clayton, to name some, aside from the activity with his own band.
At the age of 26 years Logan recorded his debut album as a leader entitled Cerebral Flow. Two years later he followed up with his sophomore album entitled Ethos.
Initially in 2009 Logan contacted his dream band, a special mix of personalities including, leader, composer, and saxophonist Logan Richardson, guitarist Pat Metheny, pianist Jason Moran, bassist Harish Raghavan, and drummer Nasheet Waits to see who would be interested in recording a project together. Everyone agreed, and was enthusiastic to record a project together and so it took a few years to pull all of the components together. But now the project has been given birth. The album SHIFT has a strong story telling dynamic, and a deep showing of love, respect, and comradery and is now signed by Blue Note Records, released in October 2015 in Japan and in spring 2016 in the US as well as Europe.
Knowing how interesting these artists are individually, it is truly remarkable to hear what they have created together on this record date.
Logan is now putting together a live band for our touring period in 2016. Pianist Sam Harris, bass player Harish Raghavan and drummer Nasheet Waits as well as Mike Moreno on guitar are happy to play this great album live on stage with him.
