A power trio that brings in the noise, the funk, the rock, and the jazz. (The New Yorker)
“A power trio that brings in the noise, the funk, the rock, and the jazz.” (New Yorker) The founding guitarist and drummer of rock icons Living Colour join legendary bassist Melvin Gibbs for two blistering evenings of virtuosity and infectious grooves. Vernon Reid and Will Calhoun’s trajectory together has been possessed of devastating power with Living Colour – a band rooted in the Black Rock Coalition whose multi-platinum, GRAMMY-winning 1988 debut Vivid and it’s crushing lead-off track “Cult of Personality” established them as arena-filling rock giants and an era-defining musical force.
Calhoun’s résumé includes notable work with Jaco Pastorius, Pharoah Sanders, Jack DeJohnette, and Wayne Shorter, and Reid has had a storied career, recording with Bill Frisell, Geri Allen, and as part of the Tony Williams Lifetime tribute Spectrum Road with Jack Bruce, John Medeski, and Cindy Blackman-Santana. Gibbs has been one of major rock and funk bassists since the 1980s, performing widely with Rollins Band and recording with avant-funk pioneers Defunkt, guitar genius Sonny Sharrock, Downtown icon Arto Lindsay, and DJ Logic.
Together, Reid and Gibbs were charter members of revered drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson’s free funk juggernaut Decoding Society, and bring that intensity to Zig Zag Power Trio. Their debut release, Woodstock Sessions Volume 9, includes powerhouse originals along with covers of material by Pharoah Sanders, Ornette Coleman, Ronald Shannon Jackson, and Junior Kimbrough.
