Spirituality moulded into sound suggests far less transfiguration than an interpretation put into words. When spirituality is then musically proclaimed with the unrivalled fervour and truthfulness that the charismatic Lloyd lets flow through his saxophone, then this spirituality reaches an authentic metaphysical level. Without any esoteric sentimentalism or religious delusion. Lloyd has been on this journey for five decades, accompanied by interruptions due to his orientation, in the course of which he endeavours to penetrate the innermost depths of sound and the essence of music. In the meantime, he has come exceptionally close. And the now 86-year-old saxophonist impressively proclaims the "liberation of sound", which flows unrestrictedly. In each of his quartets in particular, he allows the eventfulness of his sound worlds to blossom in yet another extraordinary form. That naturally flowing amalgam of traditional jazz parameters and the resulting final scenario of formal and tonal detachment, blues roots, an airy rock motorik and folky melos, which he developed with his epochal 1960s quartet and whose magic captivated not only the jazz but also the rock audience. Lloyd has succeeded in revitalising the spirit and driving esprit of this band more clearly than ever before. Fresh energy pulsates, the daring is unbroken. Lloyd's musical substrate is becoming ever more compelling. The poetic power and coherence of the group dynamics reach a new level of transcendence. At the centre of this, Lloyd's radiance and generosity. "The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow" is the title of Lloyd's latest opus. The heavens will open and we will once again follow four "Dream Weavers" on their deeply moving "Journey Within". (Hannes Schweiger)
