Keyboardist Scott Kinsey Returns to Europe in Early 2025 with a Heartfelt Tribute to Jazz Icon Joe Zawinul
An All-New Tour Features Material from Luniwaz LIVE, the Recent Album on Whirlwind Recordings, with Patrick Bartley Jr, Hadrien Feraud & Gergo Borlai
If there’s a keyboardist better qualified to extrapolate on the sonic legacy of Joe Zawinul, they must inhabit another dimension. If nothing else, Scott Kinsey’s 2019 release We Speak Luniwaz proved this point, but it also showed the synthesist and bandleader coming into his own, even when speaking through the Zawinul canon. Now Kinsey honors Zawinul once again with the Luniwaz LIVE Tour, set to begin in Feb-March of 2025.
The recent Luniwaz LIVE album (Whirlwind Recordings) was captured live on April 29, 2023, at The Jazz Dock in Prague. Kinsey brandishes a monster band that has not only woven the Zawinul material into their own DNA, but also has the amazing ability to take it into their own unique zone. The cast of stellar “sidemen” includes fiery alto saxophonist Patrick Bartley Jr, electric bassist Hadrien Feraud and mega-drummer Gergo Borlai.
SCOTT KINSEY
The electro-jazz keyboardist first gained notoriety by stepping directly onto the cutting-edge music scene with fusion juggernauts Tribal Tech, becoming part of their most enduring touring and recording lineup. Kinsey has since amassed impressive credits as a sideman, producer, composer and bandleader, working with a veritable who’s who of the electric jazz world. As protege and friend of the late Joe Zawinul, he is uniquely positioned to further the legacy of the late musical titan.
PATRICK BARTLEY JR
A Grammy-nominated saxophonist, composer and founder of the J-Music Ensemble is the newest name among Kinsey’s high-powered unit. With affinities that include a deep understanding traditional jazz as well as “out influences” such as Japanese video game music, Bartley’s bold talents bring an undeniable freshness to the party on Luniwaz LIVE.
HADRIEN FERAUD
In 2007, when the French-born electric bass phenom exploded onto the scene with his debut album, the Jaco comparisons were not unwarranted. Rarely has one so young appeared with a skill set poised to fully embrace the Pastorius legacy and introduce even more possibilities for the instrument. Since then, Feraud has not disappointed, releasing two solo albums and recording or performing with jazz-rock legends like John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Mike Stern and most recently, Hiromi Uehara.
GERGO BORLAI
The Hungarian drummer extraordinaire appeared on literally hundreds of recordings in his home country before ascending to his current spot as one of the world’s top-tier drummers. With uncommon fire, flow and spontaneity as his hallmarks, he has garnered raves for his talents from musicians, music lovers, and legends alike, including drum icon Dennis Chambers. Gergo has released four albums as a leader, including 2020’s Missing Song, with which he pays tribute to nine of modern drumming’s masters.
Not since the heydays of Weather Report and The Zawinul Syndicate have these musical treasures been delivered with such grace, originality and fire!
