Benjamin Koppel, born in 1974, is an internationally renowned Danish jazz musician and award-winning author. He comes from a family of musicians in which storytelling over dinner has always played a major role. He found the story of Anna, his grandfather's long-lost sister, so fascinating that he was determined to tell it. With his debut novel “Anna’s Song”, which was published in Denmark in 2022 and in Germany in 2024, Benjamin Koppel achieved a surprise bestseller.
As a musician, Benjamin Koppel has been a frequent guest, mostly with top-class “sidemen” such as Peter Erskine, Kenny Werner, James Genus and Antonio Sanchez. On the occasion of this year’s “Buch Wien”, Koppel is in the Austrian capital at the invitation of the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Denmark in his profession as a writer. Of course, he is also taking his instrument with him and we are putting together a fine local band to round off his stay musically. It promises to be an exciting evening combining a reading from “Anna’s Song” (in German), with music and songs bringing the story of a young Jewish woman trying to make her way in the music scene of Copenhagen’s interwar period to life. Velkommen til klubben! CH
