With Die Welt von Gestern, the onQ collective presents a new project dedicated to exploring the work of Stefan Zweig. The suite consists of five newly composed pieces that deal with themes such as identity, exile, social change and artistic reflection - inspired by Zweig's literature and his contemporary environment.
The project brings together two prominent voices of the Dutch jazz scene, Tyn Wybenga and Ben van Gelder, with the onQ Ensemble. While Wybenga's three works focus on Zweig's short stories (The Invisible Collection, The Fugitive and Chess Novella), van Gelder draws inspiration from two paintings by Oskar Kokoschka - a contemporary and companion of Zweig's in the cultural Vienna of the interwar period.
Both artists contribute different compositional perspectives: Wybenga works with his “Brainteaser Method”, in which improvised material forms the basis for structured orchestration. Van Gelder, on the other hand, pursues a more lyrical and harmonically dense sound language, which often arises from the combination of music and visual impressions.
