Yumi Ito creates worlds beyond all boundaries with her voice. The Swiss singer of Polish and Japanese descent is considered one of the most outstanding representatives of vocal improvisation and moves effortlessly between genres and her activities as a singer, pianist, composer, and improviser.
As the daughter of Japanese concert pianist Suguru Ito and Polish mezzo-soprano Margo Cadias, Yumi Ito, who grew up and lives in Switzerland, was born into music, so to speak. Nevertheless, she had to find her own way. She was not happy with the classical jazz singing she learned at university, and her discovery of experimental music was a liberation, turning her music into an amalgam of jazz, art pop, electronica, and neoclassical.
Today, she ranks alongside exceptional Swiss vocalists such as Christian Zehnder and Andreas Schaerer. She has an incredible voice that is unparalleled in its power, expressiveness, and intensity, coupled with a brilliant talent for improvisation and outstanding qualities as a composer. She has impressively demonstrated this on stage alongside stars such as Becca Stevens, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Mark Turner.
The Swiss singer with Japanese-Polish roots moves with dreamlike ease through the pitches, shades, and nuances that few jazz singers have ever been heard to achieve.
