Austrian drummer and composer Mathias Ruppnig, based in Berlin, is one of the most distinctive voices of the European jazz scene. With his ensembles, he regularly brings his music to international stages and collaborates with outstanding artists such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Doug Weiss, Jim Rotondi, Charles Altura, Ben van Gelder, Jeremy Pelt, Bill McHenry, China Moses, Annett Louisan, and Justin Stanton (Snarky Puppy). In addition to performances at renowned festivals such as Jazzfestival Saalfelden (AT), CULLY Jazz Festival (CH), Inntöne Jazz Festival (AT), Jazz in the Park (Romania), Alfa Jazz Fest (Ukraine), Jarasum Jazz Festival (South Korea), and Jazzmandu (Nepal), he is present in numerous projects across Europe and beyond. With his new album FOAM, Mathias Ruppnig now presents for the first time in Austria the music of his upcoming release (out on 12 December 2025) – an exclusive concert showcasing the energy and complexity of his compositions in their full intensity.
Following his highly acclaimed releases Square and The Spinning, Mathias Ruppnig now presents FOAM, his third studio album – a personal and multi-layered work that unites long-time musical companions and new creative impulses.
For this album, Ruppnig brought together some of his most formative musical partners:
Kurt Rosenwinkel (guitar, USA), one of the most influential jazz guitarists of our time, is a long-standing collaborator whose distinctive sound shapes FOAM profoundly. Their previous collaborations, such as Berlin People (Tobias Meinhart) and the Kurt Rosenwinkel Trio, reflect a deep artistic connection.
Tony Tixier (piano, synth, France), with whom Ruppnig previously worked in the band Scopes (featuring Ben van Gelder), adds depth, motion, and modern tonal colors.
Musina Ebobissé (tenor saxophone, France), a former bandmate in vocalist Ganna Gryniva’s ensemble, and Joandèr Cruz (alto saxophone & flute, Brazil), who joined the recording session spontaneously and immediately impressed both musically and personally, bring expressive phrasing and melodic freedom.
Lorenz Heigenhuber (double bass, Germany), whom Ruppnig met after relocating to Leipzig, completes the ensemble as a close musical confidant.
Guest appearances include Australian vocalist Matilda Abraham (vocals on Ivy) and Austrian percussionist Roland Hanslmeier (percussion on Jimbo).
The result is an album of sonic warmth, rhythmic sophistication, and emotional depth – a work that carries Mathias Ruppnig’s unmistakable artistic signature in every note.
"Mathias Ruppnig is an excellent musician and a fine person. I have had the pleasure working with him in not only Tobias Meinharts band but also in my own trio." (Kurt Rosenwinkel)
"Mathias has a beautiful touch and sound. The flow is there and I like the intricate compositional moves, especially in the song Echo of their own Prejudices." (Magnus Öström)
"As a musician, Mr. Ruppnig is perfectly at home in a wide variety of artistic environments, and it has been a great gift to be able to observe his remarkable growth over the past several years." (Ed Partyka)
"FOAM by Mathias Ruppnig is an impressive album on which he masterfully combines his sense of rhythm, timbre and composition." (Reini P. Schmoelzer)
"What a wonderful surprise! 'Foam' may be the production of a drummer, but it is far more than just a dizzying drummer’s record! Like a sponge, the Austrian drummer and composer, who has been based in Berlin for many years, absorbs the most diverse styles – from modern straight ahead to highly complex grooves with surprising melodic and harmonic twists, all the way to fragile and intimate ballads.“ (Heinrich von Kalnein)
