Since its founding in 2016, Shake Stew has developed from an insider tip to one of the most influential formations on the European jazz scene. Die ZEIT called them “Austria's jazz band of the moment,” NDR elevated them to “cult band” status early on, and their international status was finally confirmed with the Amadeus Austrian Music Award 2023 and the German Jazz Prize 2021.
Whether in a packed club, the sold-out Wiener Konzerthaus, or the Elbphilharmonie, Shake Stew's hypnotic mix of driving rhythms and trance-like soundscapes unleashes an energy that quickly took them to the world's most important festival stages. In 2024, ORF even dedicated a documentary to the band entitled “Shake Stew – Jazz für alle!” (Shake Stew – Jazz for everyone!), which traces their extraordinary journey and also highlights their collaboration with saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings.
2026 marks their 10th anniversary. And it wouldn't be Shake Stew if they didn't celebrate this occasion with a musical spectacle – the three-part album project TEN ONE TWO THREE. The first two parts, featuring exclusively new music, will be released in the spring, with the third following in the fall. The band is also starting a new chapter in terms of personnel in its anniversary year: Yvonne Moriel, one of the most exciting newcomers on the scene, is joining the band and giving Shake Stew a fresh sound.
After ten years, countless concerts from Europe to overseas, and seven albums, one thing is clear: Shake Stew has long been more than just a jazz band—they are an event. And they show no signs of slowing down.
