A sound of jazz that does not stop at its own boundaries, but seeks proximity to other genres in an incredibly varied way – this is exactly what you hear on “Find The Path” (Double Stop Records), the new album by the JOE ABENTUNG TRIO.

A classic jazz piano trio that seems completely unwilling to act classically in musical terms; this is probably the most accurate way to describe the musical orientation of the trio led by Tyrolean bassist and composer Joe Abentung. What Abentung and his two colleagues, pianist Oliver Kent and drummer Klemens Marktl, do on their joint album is to build a tension-filled bridge between the classical forms of jazz and its modern variations and other genres.
Sophisticated musical entertainment that is great fun

It's not that other bands haven't tried this before, but Abentung, Kent, and Marktl succeed in bringing a breath of fresh air and a slightly different touch to the genre. It is above all the light-footed and joyful manner in which the three instrumentalists play their way through the pieces that captivates the listener from the very first moment.

Abentung, Kent, and Marktl are incredibly playful, technically highly skilled, and extremely musical in their pieces. The sound they produce is varied and beguilingly casual and elegant, constantly grooving and swinging, with virtuoso tempo reigning supreme in one place and soft, soulful, and atmospheric sounds in another. Each track offers something different. It is this constant interplay between intensities that creates the tension and thus also the gripping atmosphere.

With “Find The Path,” Joe Abentung and his colleagues present an album that offers sophisticated musical entertainment, but is also a lot of fun. A thoroughly successful interpretation of what jazz can mean today. (Michael Ternai, 2021)
