The European Jazz Workshop 2026 at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna takes the “Second Viennese School” and its twelve-tone technique, developed by Schoenberg, Webern, and Berg, as its starting point. The focus is on the question of how these compositional principles can be applied in contemporary large-ensemble jazz compositions—both as a direct compositional tool and as a source of inspiration for new aesthetic approaches.

Under the thematic umbrella “Artistry in Rhythm,” the workshop aims to demonstrate that even complex serial-based materials can be transformed into a rhythmic, grooving concept. This also establishes a connection to the jazz tradition, particularly to Stan Kenton, in whose ensemble the composer Bob Graettinger impressively integrated techniques of the Second Viennese School.

“Artistry in Rhythm” then brings the theme back to Vienna, where Mathias Rüegg released an album under this title with the Vienna Art Orchestra, dedicating a track to each European capital.

During an initial workshop in February, the topic was introduced to the participating students, and they were shown ways to creatively incorporate the “Second Viennese School” into their own compositional work. In the second workshop in September, the students’ original compositions will be arranged for the European Jazz Workshop Orchestra and presented at a concert at Porgy&Bess in Vienna.
