When composers sit at the piano, special musical moments arise, because for composers, the piano is not just a piano, but sometimes a medium of expression for their longing for larger, more complex ensembles. Composition happens spontaneously, and two hands shape music ranging from ensemble to orchestral pieces. Thus, in my opinion, the music can’t possibly turn out to be boring when virtuoso fingers are left to do the thinking. The piano recital characterized by “instant composing” has—of course—a long tradition in classical music, but this specialty has also existed in jazz ever since jazz began. Some names that come to mind: Duke Ellington, Paul Bley, Steve Kuhn, and, of course, the godfather of big-band composition himself—Gil Evans……One of my favorite albums: *Anti Heroes* by Evans/Konitz…..maybe there will suddenly be two of them on stage after all.
