(...) In addition to the sometimes very raucous trio, in which early Jazzwerkstatt members Clemens Wenger and Herbert Pirker appear as sidemen on albums such as “Moped,” Nagl also runs his quintet. This has a rather chamber music background, which is reflected in Stefan Parnreiter's tribute to “strichcode” from 2001. While a quarter of a century ago Joanna Lewis (violin), Josef Novotny (piano), Achim Tang (bass), and Patrice Heral (percussion) were in the lineup, the new quintet has consisted of Max Nagl (alto/sopranino sax), Georg Vogel (piano), Gregor Aufmesser (bass), Martin Eberle (trumpet), and Phil Yaeger (trombone) since 2018. “Pdorvk,” the quintet's 2020 album, was already inspired by the work of Anthony Braxton, which is less evident on the current recording “Phasolny,” except for the austere remake “6c.” Although agile bravura remains a trademark, the carefully composed pieces seem even more graceful, flowing into one another more finely.
